Dr. Gavin Parker is a full-scope rural family physician with Certificates of Added Competence in Family Practice Anesthesia and Emergency Medicine. He has practiced in Pincher Creek for over a decade, is father to three children, and holds an M.Sc. in medical education. Dr. Parker chairs national medical conferences, serves as board chair of Alberta’s RhPAP, and is Medical Director for the Pincher Creek Health Centre and visitor safety programs. He and his wife Jennifer run the Barracuda Judo Club, and he is the CAO of Lost Things Distillery in Pincher Creek.
Dr. Sarah Lespérance is a rural generalist physician practicing in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and Nunavut. After residency at Dalhousie, she worked extensively in northern Canada and held site leadership positions at Dalhousie and Memorial Universities. Sarah teaches medical students and residents, and her research spans rural physician wellness, tuberculosis treatment, and rural operative delivery. She has held leadership roles and spoken on rural health equity and education. Sarah is married to Fraser, with two children, and enjoys long-distance running and outdoor activities with her family.
Dr. Elaine Blau, a U of S alumna ('91), is a rural physician, Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster, and SRPC member. With a thirty-year career, she has practiced in rural Ontario, served as a locum in Inuvik, NWT, and taught in Hamilton. As McMaster's Rural Residency Director (2004-2016), she doubled rural residency CaRMS spots and enhanced rural faculty teaching. Dr. Blau has contributed to CFPC committees on rural curriculum and co-chaired
SRPC's Rural and Remote Conferences (2019-2022). She now practices and supervises trainees on the Bruce Peninsula, where she is Lead Physician for a two-clinic Family Health Team. She enjoys knitting, painting, photography, and kayaking.
Dr. Emmanuel Abara graduated as a Gold Medallist in Community Health from Ibadan and trained in General Surgery in Nigeria before completing Urology at the University of Toronto. Since 1989, he has practiced as a consultant Urologist in Ontario, focusing on rural patient-centric care, including Telemedicine. He established satellite urology clinics in Northern Ontario, providing a platform for teaching and mentoring. Dr. Abara has held leadership roles, including President of Medical Staff at Timmins & District and York Central Hospitals, and has been active in medical education, research, and global health initiatives. He is married to Nkeiru and has four children.
